Terry or The Omega 3 Connection

Terry: My Daughter's Life and Death Struggle with Alcoholism

Author: George S McGovern

It was just before Christmas 1994 that Senator George McGovern received the terrible news that his forty-five-year-old daughter, Terry, had been found dead in a parking lot near her Madison, Wisconsin, home. In an alcoholic stupor, Terry had stumbled out of a bar and into a snowbank, where she fell asleep and froze to death. In this extraordinary remembrance, Senator McGovern attempts to come to grips with the circumstances of his child's demise as well as her troubled life. Alcohol and depression were always twin curses for Terry. Though she maintained a facade of well-being, especially while working on her famous father's political campaigns, she was desperately trying to conquer her addictions. For long stretches of her adult life, despite her efforts to stay sober, she was shuttled in and out of detox centers and institutions. Throughout McGovern's remarkable career in Washington and after his retirement from the Senate, Terry's illness shadowed her parents' every activity. Could they save her without destroying themselves? Were McGovern's political ambitions a factor in Terry's despair? Could Terry's two young daughters - the Senator's grandchildren - remain with their mother? Terry's struggle, and the McGovern family's efforts to save her and learn from her illness, are the heartbreaking themes of this painful and unforgettable book. With courage and compassion, George McGovern addresses a private tragedy with an intimacy and honesty rarely achieved by a public figure. Terry is a book that has forever changed McGovern's life and will undoubtedly alter America's view of alcoholism.

The Omega-3 Connection: The Groundbreaking Antidepression Diet and Brain Program

Author: Andrew Stoll

Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects

For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.

Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. The Omega-3 Connection provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including

  • Which omega-3-rich foods to eat

  • The most effective over-the-counter supplements

  • How to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans

  • Simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, and more

Alzheimers Early Stages or I Dont Have to Make Everything All Better

Alzheimer's Early Stages: First Steps for Family, Friends, and Caregivers

Author: Daniel Kuhn

This edition includes the latest information on Alzheimer's risk factors, treatments, and prevention, as well as a new chapter, "Voices of Experience," composed of reflections by family members. It also provides information about new drugs approved since 1999 and the federal government's decision to cover counseling and other health-related services through Medicare.

Library Journal

First published in 1999, this valuable guide by the education director of the Mather Institute on Aging (Evanston, IL) remains one of the few books devoted solely to the early stages of the disease. Updated chapters cover the importance of getting a diagnosis, risk factors (including the role of depression), early symptoms, treatment and prevention, and information on physical health, safety concerns, caring for the caregiver, and financial and end-of-life planning-all illustrated with brief, first-person narratives. Of special interest are chapters on relationships, including telling others about the diagnosis, and the fully revised section on current available treatments. New to this edition is a chapter detailing family experiences with memory impairment, which Kuhn compiled from a survey of 1400 caregivers. Intelligently written with numerous references to professional and consumer literature, this book is an excellent choice for Alzheimer's and consumer health collections. —Regis Philbin

Jennifer Johnston Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information - Library Journal

Agatston (medicine, Univ. of Miami; The South Beach Diet) adds yet another book to his successful series. A cardiologist for more than 30 years, Agatston focuses his expertise on what he knows best: maintaining a healthy heart. He espouses four preventive techniques: diet, exercise, diagnostic tests, and medications. The first half of the book includes Agatston's reasoning for utilizing these preventive measures, documented studies and patient testimonials, a gender-specific questionnaire, and information on when invasive surgeries such as angiograms and angioplasties might be necessary. The second part is devoted to Agatston's four-step plan, with a basic overview and sample meal plans from the South Beach Diet, a detailed workout regimen of walking and Pilates-based exercises, and discussions of which medical tests are most important in monitoring one's heart and which prescription and over-the-counter medications (and supplements) are most beneficial and why. Those previously reluctant to take medications won't necessarily be persuaded by Agatston's confidence, and the diet chapter is too slight for most to grasp—but ultimately, Agatston's popularity makes this a necessary purchase for public libraries.

Ultra Metabolism or The Encyclopedia of Dim Mak

Ultra-Metabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss

Author: Mark Hyman

An instant New York Times bestseller, UltraMetabolism finally reveals why it's so hard to lose weight. As renowned physician Mark Hyman explains, our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs as a matter of survival. It's embedded in our DNA.

Unfortunately, our genetic blueprint has not changed as our diet has evolved; as a result, our bodies are not designed to process the types of food we are fed today. And making matters worse is the fact that diets just don't work; the average person who goes on a diet actually gains five pounds.

But now a medical revolution is finally showing us precisely how the powerful forces that keep weight on can actually be reprogrammed to automatically burn fat and keep weight off for good. For the first time ever, Dr. Mark Hyman makes this new science of weight loss available to the general public. This medical revolution is based on a groundbreaking concept called nutrigenomics—the science of how food talks to our genes.

UltraMetabolism tells you how these scientific breakthroughs can help you:

  • Work with your body instead of against it
  • Ignite the natural fat-burning furnace within you
  • Discover the seven fundamental causes of weight gain

An easy-to-follow eight-week plan to help you lose weight based on your own unique genetic needs, UltraMetabolism is your personal program for permanent weight loss and lifelong health.

Publishers Weekly

Physician Hyman (Ultra-Prevention: The 6 Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life) delivers plenty of scientifically grounded information about weight loss myths, effective individualized strategies centered around the theme of stoking metabolism and a detailed six-week plan-complete with menus and recipes-that "will help you lose 11 to 21 pounds" in those first six weeks. The data and prescription the author provides are far from simple, and results, if attained, are not automatic. But dogged readers will come away from the book with a thorough understanding of dieting principles, such as the timing of meals, portion size, glycemic load, phytonutrient index, the weight loss benefits of relaxation and the optimized functioning of the thyroid. There are straightforward principles buried in the text, such as "eat fruits and vegetables" and "move your body," plus tips for eating out (e.g., "don't be afraid to ask for substitutions in a dish," "request a `crudites platter'... instead of the breadbasket" and "order a light drink"); adhering to these tips alone should prove beneficial. The opportunity for readers to remember and apply any of the more involved information is a possible positive side effect. (Apr.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

The long-awaited, complete guide to the popular, vigorous American method of yoga that is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom and scriptures

“In this day and age of health and fitness trends, it is assuring to know that Sharon and David encourage their students to draw inspiration from the classical texts of Yoga and timeless scriptural sources. What I appreciate so much about David and Sharon is how they help their Yoga students to understand and appreciate the wisdom of all the great saints and jivamuktas who have contributed to raising consciousness. Ultimately, it is Self-Realization, that is the true goal of Yoga.”
–SRI SWAMI SATCHIDANANDA

Creators of the extremely popular Jivamukti Yoga method and cofounders of the New York City studios where it is taught, Sharon Gannon and David Life present their unique style of yoga for the first time in book form. As they explain their intensely physical and spiritual system of flowing postures, they provide inspiring expert instruction to guide you in your practice.

Unlike many books about yoga, Jivamukti Yoga focuses not only on the physical postures but also on how they evolved–the origins of the practices in yoga’s ancient sacred texts and five-thousand-year-old traditions–the psychotherapeutic benefits that accrue with a steady practice, and the spiritual power that is set free when energy flows throughout the mind and body. Jivamukti Yoga, which means “soul liberation,” guides your body and soul into spiritual freedom, physical strength, peace of mind, better health, and Self-realization–the ultimate goal of any practice. Gannon andLife help you understand each of the practices that comprise the yoga path to enlightenment:
AHIMSA–The Way of Compassion: choosing nonviolence, respecting all life, practicing vegetarianism, living free of prejudice
ASANA–The Way of Connection to the Earth: postures and sequences, breathing, transforming energy, understanding the bandhas
KARMA–The Way of Action: creating good karma, giving thanks
NADAM–The Way of Sacred Music: appreciating the sacred sounds of yoga
MEDITATION–The Way of the Witness: how to sit still and move inward
BHAKTI–The Way of Devotion to God: living with love, grace, and peace

Whatever yoga you practice, Jivamukti Yoga will help you to strengthen and deepen that practice and lead you onto a path of spiritual clarity and self-discovery.

“If there is only one book you read about the practice of Yoga, this should be the one. Sharon and David are deeply dedicated students and teachers of Yoga who have the rare capacity to translate their profound understanding to the reader. This book is for anyone who wishes to find transformation through Yoga. I’m grateful for their work and teaching.”

Coping with Prednisone or The Complete Book of Garlic

Coping with Prednisone* (*And Other Cortisone-Related Medicines): It May Work Miracles But How Do You Handle the Side Effects?

Author: Eugenia Zukerman

Approximately one million Americans per year take high doses of prednisone and related drugs. While these medicines may be necessary to treat serious illnesses, they may also have unpleasant, and even devastating, side effects, including changes in mood, weight, and physical strength, and vulnerability to infection.
In 1997, after acclaimed flutist Eugenia Zukerman was prescribed prednisone for a rare lung disease, she teamed up with her sister, Harvard physician Julie Ingelfinger, to write the first book that helps patients deal with the side effects of the prescription.
This welcome update to a superb resource—which is still the only book on the subject— covers the latest knowledge about bone health, the use of steroids for children, and new steroid compounds, along with additional strategies and exercises based on their own experiences and responses from other patients and physicians.

The Complete Book of Garlic: A Guide for Gardeners, Growers, and Serious Cooks

Author: Ted Jordan Meredith

An essential element in cuisines around the world, garlic enjoys near mythic status among cooks, chefs, foodies, and enthusiasts of natural remedies. Worldwide, garlic cultivation occupies over 2 million acres of farmland, an area that has more than doubled since 1970. Yet even garlic fanciers may be unable to tell hardneck from softneck, or Purple Stripe from Rocambole, not to mention the hundreds of cultivated varieties grown today, many with distinct differences in taste and character.

In fact, the wealth of garlic varieties in nearly a dozen horticultural groups rivals that of corn, carrots, apples, and peaches. This book is the most comprehensive and in-depth guide available to what surely should be the next gourmet frontier. From 'Ajo Rojo' to 'Zemo', Meredith presents illustrated profiles of nearly 150 cultivars. Detailed chapters cover natural history, the history of garlic in cultivation, the nuances of cuisine and culture, therapeutic benefits, plant structure, how to cultivate, curing and storage, taxonomy, pests and diseases, and chemistry.

Especially useful are the Quick Guides, which summarize information on growing and buying garlic and provide recommendations for the best-tasting cultivars for specific uses and climates. Lists of garlic sources and organizations are a boon to the aficionado. Whether you share Ted Jordan Meredith's "garlic affliction" or just find the pungent bulb indispensable, you'll understand it as never before with this meticulously researched, lovingly written exploration.

Bonnie Poquette - Library Journal

Meredith modestly refers to himself as a "gatherer and assembler" of information rather than an expert. But he's a garlic aficionado whose verve and thoroughness are evident in this outstanding work, much the way his skills were clear in his Bamboo for Gardens, which won the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Literature Award in the general interest category. A passionate home grower and consumer of garlic, Meredith cites not only his personal experience but also numerous scientific studies while writing of garlic's natural history, structure, cultivation, taxonomy, diseases, and chemistry. He highlights garlic's influence on economics and various cultures; there are chapters on its importance as both a medicine and as a food (though this book does not supplant garlic cookbooks). A directory organized by horticultural groups includes 150 cultivars widely available in North America. "Quick Guides" list the author's favorite cultivars for specific needs like "early harvesting" or "exceptionally large cloved." Beautifully illustrated, and one of the most comprehensive garlic books in recent years, this is highly recommended for larger public libraries and for all horticultural libraries.

The Heart Speaks or Ellie Hermans Pilates Props Workbook

The Heart Speaks: A Cardiologist Reveals the Secret Language of Healing

Author: Mimi Guarneri

Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease -- and despite remarkable interventional and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually. In The Heart Speaks, Dr. Mimi Guarneri reveals groundbreaking new research that the heart is a multilayered, complex organ, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities independent from the mind -- and that healing the heart can have more to do with healing the mind and soul than we ever knew.

From childhood in a family riddled with heart disease to a medical career facing the pounding heartbeats of cardiac emergencies, Dr. Guarneri draws us into the intimate moments of life and death, and leads us on a riveting exploration of the heart's many mysteries. Through her compelling memoir we see that it is only by knowing the whole heart -- its mental, emotional, spiritual, and universal aspects -- that we can truly heal.

Publishers Weekly

A lyrical writer as well as a cardiologist, the author, founder and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, describes how she learned that beyond the power of our most sophisticated medical equipment is a physician's humanity-"the listening ear, the healing touch, the devices of healers throughout time." Guarneri became highly accomplished at angioplasty and stent procedures, but came to realize that those she treated could also be helped by proper nutrition and stress reduction techniques such as yoga and visualization. She became committed to practices such as those of Dean Ornish, with whom she has worked, to reverse coronary disease with diet, exercise, meditation and support groups. Guarneri studied the link between depression and heart disease, and opened her mind to the validity of other alternative treatments, including energy healing, visualization before and after surgery, and spiritual practices. What is particularly attractive about this chronicle is the author's graceful integration of her own story-the destructive effect on her of stress and overwork-into those of her patients. Guarneri deplores the financial constraints that prevent doctors from spending time with patients and that many physicians have developed "a mechanic's mentality," focused on fixing rather than getting to know their patients. (Feb. 7) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

In her first book, cardiologist Guarneri (founder/medical director, Scripps Ctr. for Integrative Medicine) tours the alternative landscape of heart health and healing, weaving research summaries and her own case studies into a discussion of the effects of stress, anger, depression, grief, and prayer. She argues that a physician's compassion, patience, and empathy are key factors and that listening (a trait poorly fostered in managed-care environments) is what some patients need most. While most people probably have a general understanding of the social stressors on health, readers will likely be fascinated to learn of the heart's role as an information processing center: much like the brain, it is believed to have memory and decision-making abilities. Although at times the author's arguments seem one-sided-Guarneri presents evidence of the efficacy of prayer yet fails to note recent studies (e.g., Duke University's MANTRA II study) showing no outcome differences with remote prayer-they are ultimately persuasive. Most other alternative heart health books focus on diet, exercise, and herbs. Optimistic and heartfelt, this is recommended for public libraries.-Andy Wickens, King Cty. Lib. Ellie Herman's Pilates Props Workbook: Step-by-step Guide with Over 200 Photos

Author: Ellie Herman

Pilates is one of the fastest growing exercise trends. Now Ellie Herman, a renowned Pilates instructor and author, shows how to make Pilates more interesting and enjoyable. In this book, she introduces the reader to popular workout accessories that expand and amplify Pilates matwork exercises.

This book details each prop's unique characteristics and explains how it can enhance Pilates in its own way: the magic circles tone arms, the small ball held between the legs shapes thighs, the foam roller stretches the chest and shoulders, and the large exercise ball builds core stability.

The author guides the reader step by step through photo sequences of specially designed exercises as well as variations on traditional Pilates movements. Each series takes full advantage of the different props' abilities to produce results in less time and with less strain.

A bonus chapter describes the author's Pilates Springboard, an inexpensive and space-saving variation of the classic Pilates Cadillac. This make-it-yourself piece of equipment provides the same full-body workout as large studio equipment but at a fraction of the cost.

The Genie in Your Genes or The Longevity Revolution

The Genie in Your Genes: Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention

Author: Dawson Church

"Health writer Dawson Church, Ph.D., decided to investigate the scientific basis of so-called "medical miracles" and the role of consciousness in healing. The result is The Genie in Your Genes, the first book to summarize remarkable scientific studies that are revolutionizing the ways we think about the link between consciousness and health.

The book focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs, which can be triggered by thoughts or emotions, as well as outside events to turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system.

He explores the science behind the breakthroughs being achieved through Energy Psychology techniques, showing that there is a sound theoretical framework, based on credible experiments, for understanding these astonishing results—and predicts that these techniques will dramatically advance the fields of medicine and psychology in the coming decade.

Showcasing some 300 scientific studies, The Genie in Your Genes points to where the leading edge of science might take medicine and psychology in the next century."

The Longevity Revolution: The Benefits and Challenges of Living a Long Life

Author: Robert N Butler

Pulitzer-prize winning author Dr. Robert Butler coined the term "ageism" and made "Alzheimer's" a familiar word. Now he brings his formidable knowledge and experience in aging issues to a recent and unprecedented achievement: the extension of human life expectancy by thirty years. As Butler shows, our society had not yet adapted to this change.
The U.S. has not made a research investment in aging. Only eleven medical schools out of 145 have geriatrics departments compared to England where geriatrics is the number two specialty. We have not solidified private pension plans or strengthened Social Security to ensure that people do not outlive their resources. In this urgent and ultimately optimistic book, Dr. Butler shows why and how we must re-examine our personal and societal approach to aging right now, so that the boomers and the generations that follow may have a financially secure, vigorous, and healthy final chapter life.

Karen McNally Bensing - Library Journal

Until the early 20th century, few people made it to age 50; today, the average life expectancy is 77 and will continue to grow as science finds new ways to extend life, writes gerontologist Butler, founder of the National Institute on Aging and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Why Survive?: Being Old in America(1975). Longevity, however, is of little value in the absence of quality of life, he argues in this densely written series of discussions on the challenges of increasing longevity. Butler predicts more physical and mental illnesses and significant changes in family structure, economics, long-term care, and health care, as well as reviews the evolution of longevity, the politics of aging, and the threats of a longer life span. Despite the attraction of increased longevity, he is not convinced that a long life is always a better one. Charts, graphs, and tables, along with extensive bibliographies and detailed footnotes citing published and unpublished materials, support his points. This remarkable book demonstrates Butler's extensive knowledge of all aspects of aging. Recommended for large academic and aging collections. [See the Q&A with Butler in LJ2/1/08.-Ed.]

The Schwarzbein Principle II The Transition or The Pilates Body Kit

The Schwarzbein Principle II, The "Transition": A Regeneration Program to Prevent and Reverse Accelerated Aging

Author: Diana Schwarzbein

In her very successful book, The Schwarzbein Principle, renowned endocrinologist Diana Schwarzbein introduced her scientifically proven conclusion that degenerative diseases are not genetic, but acquired.

Many studies have supported this, proving that life expectancy is 75 to 90 percent due to habits and only 10 to 25 percent due to genetics. This means that someone who is genetically destined to die at age 100 may not live past age 60 because of poor habits and lifestyle choices that cause accelerated aging and premature death. Conversely, a person can live to 100 and be functionally healthy.

In this highly anticipated follow-up, Diana Schwarzbein, M. D. , goes beyond the diet she introduced in her first book-which literally helped thousands of people lose weight-and offers a personalized anti-aging program for readers to heal their metabolisms and stop advanced aging in its tracks.

Weaving in groundbreaking research and provocative case studies-including her own regeneration and that of her clients-she leads readers through a series of eye-opening questionnaires, which identify where they are on their path to either accelerated or healthy aging.

Based on readers' answers, she leads them to the "how-to" sections, which explain, in easy-to-follow and personalized detail, the steps they need to take to restore healthy functioning. For each unique situation, she covers five areas: Nutrition , Hormone Replacement Therapy (if needed), Tapering Off Toxic Chemicals or Avoiding Them Completely , Cross-Training Exercises and Stress Management.

The Schwarzbein Principle II is sure to follow the success of the first book and will helppeople live a more healthful lifestyle by embracing a regeneration process to prevent and reverse accelerated aging.

Publishers Weekly

Schwarzbein, founder of the Endocrinology Institute of Santa Barbara, first presented her plan for weight loss and overall well-being in The Schwarzbein Principle. This expanded follow-up is designed to help people manage stress, consume the right combination of nutrients, exercise properly, manage any necessary hormone replacement therapy and avoid toxic chemicals. By controlling these key concerns, Schwarzbein promises readers will feel better, younger and more alert and avoid degenerative diseases associated with aging. Though she cautions people not to expect quick-fix results, some will find it difficult to stick with the Schwarzbein regime when the desired physical changes don't become rapidly apparent (some readers, for instance, might gain weight before they lose it). Readers must identify their particular problems-insulin dependency, adrenaline addiction, etc.-and then modify their current diet accordingly. Meal suggestions will please some dieters-red meat and some sausage is permitted. (Condiments, protein bars and bagels are verboten, however.) Sometimes Schwarzbein's advice is quite specific-"Never eat a protein by itself. Too much protein raises adrenaline/cortisol levels and will cause you to burn out your adrenal glands over time"-and some of her warnings are a little disconcerting. "The more cardiovascular exercise you do, the faster you will age," she writes. Many readers will no doubt benefit from the Schwarzbein plan, but her promises of a radical transformation need to be tempered by more caution. And, since she offers specific advice about hormonal supplements, readers should have a complete physical and blood workup from their physicians before following all of the strategies. (Oct.) Choices in Breast Cancer Treatment or Regaining Your Self

Choices in Breast Cancer Treatment: Medical Specialists and Cancer Survivors Tell You What You Need to Know

Author: Kenneth D Miller

A diagnosis of breast cancer can be overwhelming. The disease is frightening and the medical landscape confusing. In the wake of fear and confusion comes the need to make decisions about treatment. This book provides women with medically reliable and up-to-date information to help them with these decisions.

Within these pages the reader will find a team of private consultants -- including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons, and women who have faced breast cancer -- each of whom offers sound advice and valuable insight. In addition to describing surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and breast reconstruction, the medical experts clarify choices and offer support, while breast cancer survivors tell their own stories of pain, perseverance, and triumph.

Choices in Breast Cancer Treatment is a rare blend of medical expertise and compelling personal accounts that empowers those with breast cancer to meet the disease with confidence, knowledge, and hope.

Publishers Weekly

Miller, an oncologist and director of the Yale Cancer Center Survivorship Program, presents a unique and indispensable book for women facing breast cancer, which features individual chapters written by medical experts and breast cancer survivors. Asserting that "knowledgeable people make different choices, for different reasons," Miller's overarching message is that each woman is unique, as is her experience with this life-threatening disease. Because there are so many potential scenarios-based upon the tumor's size, the stage of cancer, etc.-treatment options vary, and women must decide which route to take in a timely fashion while simultaneously confronting their fears. Miller's approach provides the reader with the sense that she's had a private and unhurried consultation with each specialist: medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons. In addition the book includes personal accounts of survivors who have faced an array of experiences, from the woman whose mammogram reveals a lump just weeks before her wedding to the breast cancer statistician who is diagnosed with the very disease she is studying. This collection will help to fortify women making tough choices, offering invaluable information along with hope. (Jan.)

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Heidi H Richardson, MD(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description:This book provides newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with medical facts, descriptions of treatment options, and tips from breast cancer survivors.
Purpose:It assists patients in understanding their treatment options in order to better prepare them to make important decisions regarding their care. The author does an excellent job of describing breast cancer in layman's terms and incorporating accounts from breast cancer survivors.
Audience:The editor is a medical oncologist at the Yale Cancer Center and is the husband of a cancer survivor. The other contributors include medical oncologists, breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, and reconstructive surgeons, as well as breast cancer survivors. Although intended for breast cancer patients, it is also an excellent resource for family members of breast cancer patients as well as women at high risk for the development of breast cancer.
Features:Organized into five sections, this book begins with an overview of breast cancer. This is followed by a discussion of treatment options, the experience of having breast cancer, and narratives from breast cancer survivors, concluding with narratives from healthcare professionals who also had breast cancer. These personal accounts provide important information about the emotional aspects associated with a diagnosis of breast cancer and may help women better anticipate the difficulties of their journey.
Assessment:This is a useful book for patients and their families as it provides a good description of treatment options as well astips from breast cancer survivors.

Rebecca Raszewski - Library Journal

In 2007, there were over 170,000 new breast cancer cases, so the need for up-to-date resources continues. Drawing on the expertise of private consultants, this five-part book edited by Miller (medicine & oncology, Yale Cancer Ctr.) succeeds at being an authoritative resource for a wide audience: women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer and even those with metastatic cancer. The first two parts introduce breast cancer and its treatments; the last three parts deal with the personal experience of breast cancer. Various chapters profile doctors in specialties related to breast cancer such as radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons-there is even a chapter about doctors who are breast cancer survivors. This book effectively illustrates the disease's complexity. Readers will see how women made choices based on what was best for themselves, not on statistics. The illustrations are helpful in demonstrating how breast cancer forms and the surgical procedures. Although medical terms are defined in different sections, a glossary would have been helpful. Highly recommended for consumer health and public libraries.

Regaining Your Self: Breaking Free from the Eating Disorder Indentity: A Bold New Approach

Author: Ira M Sacker

A new understanding and approach to eating disorders from a renowned expert, coauthor of the classic Dying to Be Thin

Nearly 5 percent of Americans face an eating disorder -- and eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Long considered an affliction of young women, they are now common among young men, middle-aged women, and even children as young as five. This is a health crisis of epidemic proportions.

Regaining Your Self offers hope in the battle against eating disorders through a radical new therapy technique pioneered by Ira M. Sacker, M.D. A leader in the field, Dr. Sacker has been treating patients with eating disorders for thirty-five years. This breakthrough book, filled with firsthand accounts from patients, family members, friends, and others, provides what patients and their families desperately need: a therapeutic model that heals.

Ira M. Sacker, M.D., is Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center. He is also the Founder, President, and Medical Director of HEED Foundation, Inc. (Helping End Eating Disorders), a not-for-profit organization, and the coauthor of Dying to Be Thin. Dr. Sacker lives on Long Island, New York.

Melody Ballard - Library Journal

Once talked about only in whispers, eating disorders now receive national attention. They are so prevalent that they are widely believed to have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. It is now known that eating disorders, once attributed to teenage girls, can affect anyone of any age, gender, socioeconomic background, or ethnicity. Sacker (coauthor, Dying To Be Thin: Understanding and Defeating Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia—A Practical, Lifesaving Guide) is a highly regarded authority on the subject of eating disorders. Along with Buff, Sacker provides an in-depth view of this diverse disorder, giving readers a solid foundation for identifying eating disorders and the means to "break free" and, most important, to recover oneself. Throughout, vignettes tell the stories of those who have become victims of eating disorders, and the final chapter is a "message of hope." Insightful, well organized, and informative, this book is essential for most collections.

The Savvy Woman's Guide to Pcos (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome): The Many Faces of a 21st Century Epidemic and What You Can Do about It

Author: Elizabeth Lee Vliet

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrine cause of infertility and serious weight gain in young women. It affects millions--experts estimate about 6 to 10 percent of reproductive age women struggle with this devastating metabolic imbalance. Look around schools and malls in this country and you see the impact of this burgeoning epidemic: obese young women are everywhere. The numbers are staggering. The health risks are overwhelming--from increased risk of teenaged diabetes to young mothers with heart attacks or strokes, and early onset of breast and uterine cancers.

Early treatment is key to preventing serious health risks, but most sufferers don't even know they have PCOS. Nor do doctors take it as seriously, often minimizing symptoms like excess body hair, weight gain, acne or thinning scalp hair, thinking they are just cosmetic" problems of overanxious young women. Gynecologists focus on helping women get pregnant rather than treating acne or weight gain. Endocrinologists typically consider ovarian problems the "turf" of gynecologists. Mood swings in PCOS can be severe, but psychiatrists typically don't check hormones, so they don't identify PCOS either. What's a woman to do?

It's not enough for doctors to tell women with PCOS to just "eat less and exercise more." Women need a practical guide to help them understand the disorder, know what tests to ask for, what the tests mean, what treatments are available, and how to take a stepwise approach to healthy hormone balance, sound meal plans, exercise, and stress management. This book provides the practical, user-friendly guide that women desperately need to be successful in getting help for this devastating disorder

About the Author: Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D., is the founder and Medical Director of HER Place: Health Enhancement and Renewal for Women Inc. She has studied and written about the effects of hormone changes on PMS, PCOS, migraines, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, osteoporosis and cardiovascular risks, etc. Her bestselling books include Screaming to Be Heard: Hormone Connections Women Suspect and Doctors Still Ignore, It's My Ovaries, Stupid! and Women, Weight and Hormones. The Leptin Boost Diet transforms these findings into a unique and easy-to-follow weight-loss program that is perfect for people whose out-of-balance hormones make it impossible to lose weight on other diets. The book shows how to optimize leptin and other fat cell hormones so that the body's natural chemistry becomes an ally, instead of a barrier, in the fight against fat. Dr. Scott Isaacs, an expert in the field, clearly explains complex topics relating to the newest medical treatments, the endocrinology of fat cell hormones, identifying leptin deficiency, and improving the action of leptin in the body. His program includes clear and concise recommendations on nutrition, physical activity and vitamin and supplement intake. By boosting the body's leptin levels, the plan produces positive effects -- including appetite reduction and increased energy level, and long-term benefits like reduced body fat and a healthy metabolism -- right away.

Library Journal

In 1998, Australian clinical psychologist Attwood published Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, which quickly established him as an international expert on the condition. Here, he updates research in this rapidly evolving field, offering a wealth of information on childhood, college, long-term relationships, and careers. He gives comprehensive coverage of topics such as friendship, bullying, special interests, and theory of mind. Each chapter begins with a quote from Hans Asperger himself and includes firsthand experiences from individuals with Asperger's, including Temple Grandin, Liane Holliday Willey, and Stephen Shore. Particularly helpful are the "Key Points and Strategies" at each chapter's end and the detailed FAQs, glossary, resources, and references sections. Attwood writes, "I usually say to the child, `Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome,' and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking." Complete Quick and Hearty Diabetic Cookbook

Author: American Diabetes Association

Homestyle favorites brought back in healthful and tasty versions for you to enjoy

Every meal of the day is covered, including recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, side dishes, main courses, and desserts. You can choose from more than 250 fast and simple-tomake, low-fat recipes with old-fashioned good taste.

Kimberly Bartosz - Library Journal

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, over 1.5 million adults are diagnosed with new cases of diabetes each year. One of the treatments for controlling the disease is diet. The second edition of the American Diabetes Association's cookbook provides over 200 easy-to-follow recipes with complete nutritional information. Focusing on basic or familiar dishes, the book has recipes for pie dough, salad dressing, and sauces, as well as entrées and desserts. Most of the recipes have five or fewer steps and require ingredients commonly found in grocery stores. To keep calories, fats, and cholesterol low, many of the recipes call for no-fat or low-fat dairy products, low-sodium broths, egg substitutes, and swapping ground beef with ground turkey breast. Yet, a surprising 87 recipes (primarily main courses) exceed the FDA's definition of low-fat (five grams or fewer of fat per serving). Recommended for public libraries.
